chicago police question two high school students in the shooting death of fellow student deantonio goss. the 16-year-old son of an antiviolence activist was killed just two days into the school year. good afternoon, i'm allison payne. >> i'm steve sanders. want to welcome our viewers who are watching around the country on wgn america. wgn's nancy loo is live at area 2 police headquarters with the latest on the investigation. well, steve and allison, the two 179s in custody -- in custody are fellow bowen high school students though neither are charged in this week's

murder of a classmate. as the family of 16-year-old deantonio goss make funeral arrangements, police are moving fast in this case. the first murder of a cps student in the new school year. goss and an 18-year-old classmate were shot multiple times just blocks from the school as they walked home after classes. goss died soon after and the other student remains hospitalized. witnesses say the deadly violence was preceded by an argument in the school cafeteria hours earlier. the victim's father is a neighborhood peace activist who praised police on their work and he says it hardly matters that his son's killer may be a fellow bowen high school student. >> whether they went to school. went to the same school, go to another school, if they live next door to each other, next block, it's still sad that it is -- that we have so much anger in us that we feel the

only thing we can do is kill. >> reporter: daryl jackson is now busy with funeral arrangements and tells me the somber occasion will be more than a final farewell to detenten you. he wants the funeral to be a forum to inspire more people to fight violence and settle disputes peacefully. two bowen students are in custody. charges are pending. live at area 2 police headquarters, nancy loo, wgn news. a teenager charged with shooting to death a cps student will face a bond judge today. 18-year-old is accused of killing daryl dj mckinney. this shooting happened in humboldt park on august 28. police say thompson opened fire on a rival gang member but two bullets ended up hitting mckinney in the chest. mckinney would have been a sophomore at orr academy high school. >> and police are looking for the suspect responsible for the death of an oak park man. 41-year-old pedro was found dead in his garage yesterday with trauma to the head.

officials say the victim was on his way to work when he was killed and police believe this was not a random act of violence. the victim's 1997 red chevy lumina with illinois license plate 847-9360 is missing. anyone with information is asked to call oak park police. an oil leak in south suburban romeoville is affecting school bus routes in that area. valleyview district schools are open but school buses are not running today because the transportation center is near that spill. the underground pipes sprung a leak yesterday afternoon. the pipe was carrying 50 gallons of crude per minute when it leaked on to a roadway. 34-inch pipeline is owned by enbridge petroleum and runs from wisconsin to indiana. that same company is responsible for spilling 800,000 gallons of oil into a michigan river last month. new report card is being released in chicago and by its own stand urds -- standards many chicago public schools are

failing. judy wang joins us outside miles davis academy with more. >> reporter: good afternoon. cps report card shows about 25% of elementary schools and more than 40% of high schools are failing. miles davis academy is among the failing schools. some parents here are so stunned by the news they plan to discuss this at the next pta meeting. >> reporter: many parents tell us the news takes them by surprise. they had no idea miles davis academy was struggling. >> i'm constantly up here so i see good things happening. i don't understand why it got the f. >> amazing the score was down. >> because your child is doing well. >> yeah. doing great. >> the "chicago tribune" obtained internal documents revealing grades, cps gave to its schools last year. school system bailed grades on indicators test scores, dropout rates and attendance.

ron huberman considered making the grades sublic but he never released information saying it did not reveal the whole picture. he did push to use the information to justify closing four per -- poor performing schools. the cps report card shows 47 of 474 elementary schools received as. 146 them received fs. only four of 92 high schools received as. 39 high schools received fs. >> i think my son is doing pretty well. as far as his reading and his math and his learning. i think he is doing well. i don't know exactly what they mean when they say school is on probation. at miles davis schools test scores plumed after it was consolidated with another school last year. >> you have this many kids in one building and add more kids in the classroom, there is going to be some slippage somewhere. they need more help. i really do. more help and more time. >> so how does your child's school measure up? find out by going online to

chicagotribune.com slash cps grades. on the south side, judy wang, wgn news. mayor daley was on hand for the first of three public hearings on how to balance next year's city budget. it's the mayor's last budget. city faces a deficit of more than $600 million but many of the people who turned out were urging the mayor to spend more money to beef up police protection. lengthen library hours and bring back the july 3 taste of chicago fireworks. a second public hearing will be held tonight at 7:00 at westinghouse college prep high school. the feel of candidates has yet to be determined but already a poll on the mayor's race. the group we ask america polled 2300 chicago voters and it suggests rahm emanuel holds an early lead with 29% of the vote. sheriff tom dart is second with just over 13%. jesse jackson, jr., is right behind dart for third place. congressman luis gutierrez is

fourth. in alderman gets more than 6%. potential candidates for the race of chicago mayor are questioning rahm emanuel's credentials to run the city. emanuel served as congressman on the north side before heading to washington before becoming the chief of staff. he said earlier this year he would be interested in running for mayor but not against richard daley. other politicians from chicago say emanuel should not expect to win just because he has a lot of campaign cash. and congressman jesse joik, jr., says emanuel would bring a lot of political baggage to the race. it will become a national campaign. this will not be a local race run by local candidates debating local issues. it's about urban policy and about the president's agenda. he has served as chief of staff. president's record will broaden that campaign. >> and again emanuel hasn't said if he will run and president obama has said he does not expect emanuel to make an announcement until after the mid-term election in november. with mayor daley set to leave his post next year, private pilots say it's time to

morning show today. he talked about the change in national security. >> great deal has been accomplished. i mean, we significantly degraded al qaeda's capability and that of its affiliates around the world. we had a number of near misses and yet those near misses have shown in some ways the amture quality of a lot of the attacks. and to answer the question will the u.s. ever catch osama bin laden at this morning's news conference, president obama says al qaeda leader has gone deep underground and said the manhunt would continue. a florida pastor appears to be wavering over his plans to burn the koran. reverend terry jones said he wanted to send the message to radical muslims on the ninth anniversary on the 9-11 attacks. he said he made a deal with an imam to move location of the mosque planned near ground zero. the imam said he never made that promise and that jones backed off his plan because he felt it would endanger u.s.

troops. jones says he thinks the imam lied to him and now also says he won't burn the koran tomorrow if he can meet with the mosque organizers. thousands of afghans are protesting the reverend jones' plan to burn the muslim holy book. at least 11 people have been injured. police in northern afghanistan say several hundred demonstrators rushed nato compound where four attackers and five police were injured in clashes. protestors burned an american flag at a mosque after friday prayers. police in western afghanistan said two people were injured in another protest. a woman is charged with two counts of murder. one count of attempted murder after opening fire at a kraft food plant in philadelphia. the 43-year-old was suspended from kraft yesterday and escorted out of the building. minutes later she returned with a hand gun and started shooting. two women were killed and one man critically injured. police say hillered disliked three employees and targeted them. their names have not been released.

hiller was suspended from kraft because she was continually fighting with coworkers. she has worked at kraft for over 15 years. no one else was hurt. in california at least four people have died in that massive explosion and fire in san bruno. firefighters are still working to douse the flames and they say more victims could be found. yesterday's blast is blamed on a ruptured gas line. the company says it isolated a damaged section of the pipeline and stopped the flow of the gas. that fire destroyed at least 38 homes and damaged dozens of others. more than 50 people are injured. some are suffering with critical burns. four firefighters were treatd for smoke inhalation. federal judge in california says military's don't ask, don't tell policy is unconstitutional. the judge says she will issue an order to stop the government from banning openly gay service members. she says don't ask don't tell violates first and fifth amendment rights of gays and lesbians. the ruling came during a lawsuit against the policy.

wheaton soldier killed in afghanistan will be posthumously awarded the highest award for valor. robert miller was killed in a shootout in january of 2008. his mother says his son went tout clear area drawing an attack on himself so his 20 fellow soldiers and afghan army allies could get to safety. miller was the only soldier killed. miller's parents will be presented with his medal of honor by president obama at the white house next month. an arrest has been made in a string of home invasions in lake villa and the antioch area. muriel clair is live in libertyville with details. >> well, residents of lake villa and surrounding lake county communities can now rest easy. 19-year-old miguel rico is in custody and is being held on charges of home invasion, armed robbery and residential

burglary. lake county sheriff mark curran says last week rico entered a home in lake villa and a home in antioch. in each case the homes were occupied. authorities say rico tied up the occupants. and then took off. the victim in either case suffered any injuries. mark curry, the sheriff said this was just his way of operating. >> we talk about mo. it's just classic evil. there is no real apparent mo that jumps out in terms. the drug addiction that we became aware of nor was there anything that we were made aware of in terms he had to pay bills and was living at home working as a landscaper. one would speculate that thug mentality meaning easy money. the sheriff said that the

a change after six straight months that have been way above normal. this all started, the warm spell did, back in march. we are getting some cool numbers. we look at a couple of cool weather indices and some are at lowest levels or will be in the next two weeks that we have seen in the next couple of months. we return done with the cool weather. if you love warm weather and think this is taps for the warm this season it is not. it is as a matter of fact 100% of years have produced 70s and 80s beyond the state. we have an average of eight more 80s to go say the record books here. we will not see 80s today. it's gorgeous. 67 at glenview. valparaiso at 71. 67 waukegan and de kalb at 76 and our official thermometer at o'hare has a 70-degree temperature and note the southeasterly winds are up to 16 miles per hour and gusts now at o'hare. 70 at midway with that southeast wind. munster at 73 and 74 at

freeport. so all areas boasting beautiful sunshiny skies and we are happy to report that the drenched areas around oklahoma have dried out, too. there is tulsa and you can seat skyline there in the distance. we have rain on the way and that's in the form of these thunderstorms that could be coming in as showers are mixed thunderstorms toward morning. we are saying good-bye to hermine's remnants. most direct heavy rains have been falling in the southern mid west. this is a doppler plot of how much rain has come down. but the clouds out to the west. these will come in tonight. don't have to worry about them tonight or this evening but the showers could be in toward morning and we will show you a computer forecast on that in a moment. here is where the showers are falling heavily in kentucky and downstate illinois now and some fairly impressive looking cumulonimbus clouds and shower returns there in iowa back into parts of northwestern missouri as you can see and they are eastbound. there it is, your saturday rain and it won't come continuously.

it will come in bands. our model in-house is saying. nothing this evening. we are up to evening rush-hour there. here is midnight. see the rain starting to cross the mississippi. then by 6:00 in the morning the showers and some inundated thundershowers in our area. scattered and off and on much of the day tomorrow. and getting a fair amount of accumulation out of these. this will not be a mega rain but the average of the models put together has been kicking out around 6 to .7 of an inch of rain. that's not a massive rainfall but amounts will vary as they always do across the area. flood watches in missouri. and in the wake of the heavy rains that hermine's remnants have produced down there. here is the buckle in the jet. instrument by which you take the moisture from hermine, pull it northward. lift it and then by sunday the wind goes westerly and that brings mild pacific air in here and produces a beautiful day for the bears.

it will be very nice. see the cool air and how it settled over the northeastern and northern united states. the heat is on down south. but the reach of the cool air is spreading as we move deeper and deep for the autumn. we have 30s showing up in the northern end of 9 continent. 62 in rhinelander. actually 59 at marquette. these are current early afternoon readings now. 70 in chicago. and there you have the southeasterly winds that will be picking up the next couple of days and are starting to bring the moisture up in the plains and that will come in here and feel more humid tomorrow as well. winds are north at six at o'hare. humidity 78%. and dew points at 51. the water temperature at 66 degrees up against the chicago shoreline and pollen and mold values will come down a bit. moderate weed pollen with little ragweed here in the chicago area. sunburn times 24 and 60 minutes.

here is our forecast for the metro area. and this afternoon gorgeous. sunny and cool with late september level temperatures and winds strengthening slowly from the southeast. high temperatures 72. staying in the 60s along the lake shore where the east, northeast winds are blowing at eight to 16 miles per hour. then tonight clouding over with breezy and milder weather. low temperatures 60. scattered showers and maybe a thunderstorm toward morning. east, southeast winds will be brisk tonight 11 to 23. cloudy spells on saturday. breezy. some clusters of showers and storms but mixed dry hours as well. the rain continuously. high temperatures 70. couple of downpours could be fairly substantial but they will be over by sunday when it's mostly sunny, breezy and warmer and a high temperature of 78 degrees. little taste of autumn around here. i was menging we have a feature that's showed up called this green block. big warm air dome up there. when that sets up and we aren't clear why that keeps setting up
